SURI illustrates myths, stories, and even taboos passed down through Javanese generations usually as a method to teach about ethics, manners, and attitudes towards life. Anis Kurniasih, a young contemporary artist from Solo, preserved some of the stories onto her ballpoint and paper artworks rendered in contrasting colors. Anis Kurniasih’s great grandma lived until the age of 102 and still, her stories remain alive and became her warm childhood memory. SURI is a children’s book and an art book at the same time, printed in very limited edition.
